stuff i like

the title of this post is fully descriptive of its content. so, here goes...

--dangly earrings
--skirts. although my legs aren't quite tan enough to wear them just yet
--sitting down to a nice PB & J, wheat thins, and diet coke lunch. it is worth noting that a good pb & j is always made with crunchy peanut butter and grape jelly
--arm bands and arm warmers
--huge fireworks shows set to ridiculously patriotic music
--tic tacs. all but the orange ones
--going to museums
--a nice, thought-provoking book
--newsies. gotta sell more papes!
--sleepovers
--a really great hoodie
--sunday afternoon naps
--good impersonations and laffy taffy jokes. these two aren't necessarily related.
--dressing up
--playing little games, like would you rather or smush or the question game
--math
--card games. but not the dumb ones

one thing that's serious and a couple that are not

It's no secret that I like to lay out. A lot. Not only do you get tan, but it's also really really fun. Even though I know it is horrible for me, I have never really been motivated to change my behavior. Today, though, I read an extremely informative article in COSMO that changed my thinking. For the most part, It wasn't really anything I hadn't heard before. The article simply discussed 8 common tanning/sun myths, as well as some peripheral issues. I have no idea why it hit me this time, but I decided to actually be resposible and change my tanning habits.

Also, the article discussed the TAN Act, which is currently in Congress and aims to educate the public about the true dangers of UVA/UVB rays. It also pushes for clearer warnings in tanning salons. I was so moved by the article I actually sent a response to my Congresswoman, Hilda Solis, encouraging her to support the TAN Act.

So I'm not sure why I've decided to change things up, but here's to a melanoma free life.

On a lighter note, why have people stopped singing in their cars? It's one of my favorite pastimes. The other day I was jamming on my way home from work, and I noticed that no one else was doing the same thing. I like to go all out: singing, dancing, and of course using the cell phone antennae as my microphone. It must be a lost art, because NO ONE else was doing it. I just don't get it. On a related note (haha), I really really wish I knew all the words to Miami Sound Machine's "Turn the Beat Around."

And finally...I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best in the kitchen. Although I am learning, slowly but surely. Tonight I made a new invention. Spaghettio sandwhiches!! It's so simple and so tasty. All you do is prepare spaghettios like normal, and then spread between 2 pieces of bread. It's awesome!

spring thoughts

so...yesterday i was thinking that summer is almost here, and i started to get really excited. but then i had this huge realization that summer is actually forever away and spring has barely even begun. i think it's this weather thing in california that's throwing me off. usually, when it starts getting warm and sunny you know that summer's comin. but here, it's already been sunny and generally warm for the last few weeks. it tricks you into thinking that summer's about here, when in fact spring has barely started.

so then i got even more excited, because i remembered all the things about this spring that i was looking forward to. even just here in april there's some pretty cool stuff lined up.

1) easter. i like easter. one of my absolute fave things about this holiday is all of the super cheesy songs. these songs are exactly the type of thing that i normally describe as sick, but for some reason i love them at easter. as far as congregational singing is concerned, i particularly enjoy "Up from the Grave He Arose," b/c it's so hilar when everyone gets into it. and as far as solo acts go, the best are most def "He's Alive," "Via Dolorosa," "Arise," and the old Ray Boltz classic "Watch the Lamb." it just wouldn't be easter without them.

2) the shane & shane concert coming up in a couple of weeks. they are playing with bethany dillon (who i love love love) and i'm pumped. i'm not sure yet if i can go, but i really hope i can. i've been in cincy the last 2 times the shanes have come to cali. so it's about time i'm actually here for one of their shows

3) the LA Times book festival. i've always wanted to go (and by that i mean last year i wanted to go). every year thousands of people come to UCLA for this huge book festival. of course there's tons of vendors with all sorts of goodies. there's also a bunch of authors who do workshops and panels and stuff. franny's not coming, so i'm kinda bummed about that, but oh well. plus, there's like 5 main stages around the grounds with cool stuff going on all day. oh man, i can't wait.

on a different note, yesterday i joined the american cornhole association. i will be receiving my membership card in the mail in 7-10 business days. ahhh, there's nothing like a game of cornhole and a bottle of Ale-8 on a nice spring/summer evening. i learned on the aca's webpage that cornhole actually originated in cincinnati, and most of it's popularity is focused in the tri-state area. however, the aca is working hard to bring the joy that is cornhole to all 50 states!

good stuff
