this show is my new addiction

Dwight's response to discovering that Ryan (the temp) started the office fire by accidentally cooking his cheese pita on "oven" setting instead of "toaster" setting. If you don't already watch "the office," you really should.

p.s.-let this be a reminder to always heed recommended cooking levels

p.p.s.-as we translate from the television world to real life, my own office work environment today has reminded me why no 40-something with teenage daughters should wear a short, flowy, button-all-the-way-down-the-front sundress, circa 1996.

PETA is having a field day with this one

There's a show at an art gallery here in LA that is causing quite a stir. The reason is this...part of the exhibit is Tai, a live Indian elephant. The artist has painted Tai completely from trunk to tail. She is part of a living room art set, and is painted to blend in with the walls. I must admit this is clever...she is supposed to serve as a physical embodiment of the phrase "the elephant in the room." Cleverness notwithstanding though, I think it may be going a bit too far.

what the ?

I totally do not understand the following 3 things:

before i get started, a little side note-- thanks to a generous friend, i am currently watching "the office" for the first time. i'm only on episode 1 of season 1, but it's already one of the funniest (most funny?) things on tv.

okay. #1-
Today at the beach I literally burned the bottom of my feet. I don't mean sunburn or sun poisoning, I mean actual burn, like if you touch the stove and a blistery thing results. It's extremely painful to walk, and just standing is moderately painful. I've cerainly spent my fair share of days at the beach, and I've NEVER had something like this happen before. Mid summer heat wave days leave me unscathed, but somehow a lovely 82 degree September day cripples me.

What in the world is going on down in Mexico? I don't know everything about the situation, but I certainly watch and listen to enough news to be thoroughly annoyed with Lopez Obrador. In July he lost the Presidential election to Calderon by an extremely small margin. The recount he demanded upheld the original results. However, he has vowed not to submit to Calderon. He has set up protests, marches, and everything else to disrupt the government and cause mayhem. In fact, he has vowed to set up an alternate government, so that Mexico will have two separate governments. That idea is obviously doomed to failure. Lopez Obrador has clearly never heard the word "no" in his life. As a child he probably threw bigger and bigger tantrums until his parents got sick of it and gave him whatever he wanted.

I love Apple products, and have only recently developed my first complaint in about 2 years of customership. One of Apple's main things they market is the supposed "ease of integration" among their products and software systems. Here's the problem: Apple's iWeb changes ALL photos, graphics, etc to .png format. One of the best things about iWeb is that it can export/import your creations directly to/from other programs, such as iPhoto, Garageband, or iTunes. iTunes can ONLY read photos as jpegs. I find this ridiculous. iWeb can ONLY support .png but iTunes ONLY reads jpeg, yet the two are supposed to provide "seamless integreation." Whatever. As a result, a user's artwork/photos get distored in iTunes. This is very aggravating, but not so much that it makes me like mac products any less. I just wish they'd start making cell phones to complete the Apple suite. Steve Jobs are you reading this?

update on previous "it ain't easy being a girl" post

So, it's mid-afternoon here in sunny California, and I have about 2 hours left at work. My shoes are great and have garnered a few compliments, but I've got a HUGE blister on my foot. It pretty much kills. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it or not, and I'm pretty sure it totally is.

It ain't easy being a girl

My thought process this morning when selecting a pair of black heels to wear to work:

pair #1: I really like them, but a very high, thin heel and not really right for the outfit

pair #2: They’d be ok, but they are just a little too big

pair #3: Super comfortable, but a little too casual for this particular look

pair #4: Moderately comfortable, but not right with the cut of these pants.

pair #5: Perfect, but unbelievably uncomfortable.

So, obviously, I went with pair #5.

tried and true

In a post a couple of months ago I mentioned the different famous people I had met and/or seen out here in Los Angeles. I also mentioned how someone I know commented that “true” Californians don’t just meet famous people and not think it’s a big deal. True Californians meet famous people and then don’t even remember they met them in the first place.

Well, by this definition it seems I am a true Californian. Until recently, I totally forgot that I not only met, but spoke with Cuba Gooding, Jr. I also forgot that I worked on a movie set during summer 2005, and Darryl Hannah was in the movie. Now she’s obviously not as much of a star now as she was in the 80’s, but “Splash” will always be one of everyone’s faves. I’m not sure how I forgot I met her, considering I talked with her inside her trailer a couple of times and on at least one occasion sat right next to her in the transpo van as we rode up to the set.

In only a little over two and a quarter years I have achieved the status of an authentic California. Hmmmm… just in time to move I guess.

my new favorite bakery

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a little bakery tucked into a quiet Santa Monica sidewalk. This doesn’t seem significant, given the fact that there’s about a million little bakery/café places out here (especially over on the Westside). There was something different about this one though. It was called “Le Pain Quotidien,” which in French means “daily bread.” The storefront read “Le Pain Quotidien – Bakery and Communal Table.” I thought this was interesting, so I peeked in the window (it was past business hours). Not surprisingly, the interior was extremely adorable and inviting (the website describes it as “cosy, welcoming, and full of charm”). The weird part is that besides a few stools on the window-front bar, the inside seating was nothing but one long table. It was very odd, but seemed genius. If you go to the restaurant, you pretty much have to sit at a giant table with all the other guests. I went on their website and found read about their philosophy. These are a few nuggets I found:

*Bread not only to nourish the body, but the spirit as well. A bread best shared around a table, to be savored among friends.

*Whenever possible, baked goods not sold each day are donated to those in need.

*Where possible, we choose all of our ingredients from organic sources first…we believe they are better for you and better for the environment. Most of the ingredients used are available in the store for you to take home with you. We know because we’ve chosen the farmer and producer with care.

I can’t wait to be in the area when they are actually open. Based just on looking in the window and checking out the website, I’ve decided it’s my new favorite bakery. If you find yourself in New York City or Los Angeles (or, for that matter, in Belgium, France, Kuwait, Lebanon, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, or the United Kingdom) you should definitely check it out.

Seriously, whose idea was it to bring these back?

I’ve never really been one to drop everything in pursuit of the latest and greatest trend. I enjoy being fashionable as much as the next girl, but I don’t wear things I think are hideous just because they are in fashion. That said, there are many recent / current fashion trends that I really support. For instance, the following are some of my wardrobe faves:

- 80’s style leggings under skirts
- cowboy boots & hats
- arm warmers
- Ugg boots
- Crocs

Plus, I recently discovered that my speech is “in fashion.” A recent issue of COSMO identified the most trendy phrase as “I know, right?” I’ve been saying that one for months.

However, there is one trend I absolutely CANNOT wrap my mind around. I hope beyond all hope that I never get caught in a pair of skinny jeans. They are absolutely horrid. Skinny jeans are flattering on about 2% of the general population. Everyone else just looks disgusting in them. Unfortunately, that fact is lost upon just about everybody. People all over the place wear them because they are “in style,” with no regard to how they look on an individual person. What is perhaps most disturbing is how quickly the skinny jeans trend has been embraced by males. It’s just gross. I’m not sure who started it, but I wish skinny jeans would go back to the 80’s and rest in peace.
