a few things i realized today

1) my new favorite pen is the retractible BIC Atlantis, with black ink of course. i was a bit surprised by this revelation because this pen is a bit fatter than my usual preference. you should go pick up the convenient multi-pack.

2) shark week is returning to the discovery channel july 30. I LOVE shark week. on the way to work this morning i saw a billboard announcing its return, and i enjoyed about .2 seconds of extreme excitement. then i remembered i don't have cable. this is only the 2nd time i've truly missed having cable, the first time of course being march madness. while cbs did a fair job presenting the tournament, i really missed hearing dicky v., digger, and the gang weigh in on espn.

3) i'm watching "13 Going on 30" right now. mark ruffalo is quite possibly the most adorable thing in hollywood.

4) this morning i filled up my gas tank for $3.09/gallon. that's the lowest it's been in weeks, so let's hope this trend continues.

5) i'm really, really enjoying living in a relatively humidity free environment. (although i guess there is a bit of a give and take, as someone told me today that this is "earthquake weather")

6) i really like the song "put your records on" by corinne bailey rae. thank you rachel for yet another sweet music rec.

so you think you can stop watching this show?

I don’t quite understand the “So you think you can dance?” phenomenon. It isn’t a good show. Yet for some unknown reason, I spent two hours of my life watching it last night. I had previously seen maybe 20 minutes or so of a much earlier episode, one where the horrible (and consequently horribly amusing) dancers were on. I hadn’t seen it since, but lots of people I know are faithful viewers and seem to be quite enamored with the whole thing. I thought I’d tune in to check it out.

While some d
ancers were of course better than others, no one was super good, or even super likable for that matter. And as far as the judges go, I’m not too impressed. Despite the obvious intentional similarities, they cannot compare to the American Idol crew. I felt sort of like I did in junior high when “Saved By the Bell” tragically went off the air, and then “Saved By the Bell: The New Class” came on. Nice try, but not quite happening. On a positive note though, the token female judge has not become so much like Paula Abdul that she’s started showing up to every show absolutely trashed.

So yeah, while I concede that “SYTYCD?” is mildly entertaining, I don’t like the show much at all, really. I hereby resolve not to waste my time watching it again, and I urge you to follow suit.

61 years of wedded bliss

My grandparents, aka Mimi & Grandad, will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary tomorrow. That means they have been married for as long as me, my sister, and my younger brother COMBINED have been alive. I was thinking about it this morning, and it’s really quite remarkable. They have lived through and experienced so many things together. That’s an obvious statement, but I don’t spend much time actually thinking about it. Mimi & Grandad have personal experience living through significant historical things that I only learn about in books. I’m sure there have been plently of incredible times and also plenty of difficult times, and I can’t imagine how that strengthens and enriches a relationship and affects the bond between two people. I guess I can only hope that I’ll be just as lucky in another six decades or so

long time no blog

so, it's kinda been awhile since i last blogged. a lot has happened since then. here's the highlights. (and i use that word loosely)

**it's sorta a miracle, but i now like coffee. for years i've been trying a little sip every few weeks or so, hoping i'll suddenly like it. then, a couple of weeks ago, i took one of these said periodic sips and loved it. it's like there was some sort of threshold or something. next up: tea.

**my friend faith flew out from new york city a couple of weekends ago so we could film our audition video for the amazing race. so we'll see on that one...keeping our fingers crossed though!

**this morning was one of those perfect mornings, complete with a nice scrambled eggs breakfast. and unbelievable coffee:)

**right now i'm making me some corn on the cob. nothing says summer like some sweet corn on the cob. pun intended. ha.

**i got my first ticket a couple weeks ago. freakin officer ortiz busted me for a u-turn. at first i was kinda annoyed, but then i realized that paying the ticket would be like paying a quarter for every traffic infraction i've ever done. and that seems totally reasonable, so i'm over it.

**i got the special edition dvd of napoleon dynamite. many people dump on that movie, but i think it's 100% hilarious. it gets better and better with every viewing. in fact, i don't think its genius can be accurately described with mere words.

**i've heard rumblings that my hometown of clinton, illinois may soon be getting a 5 screen movie theater. i'm not sure what i think about that. while it may be cool for all the people who live there and spend their existence in a constant state of pure boredom, there's something not quite right about a 3 stop light town having a movie theater. too progressive? i don't know.

**the last couple days i've been thinking of how i'll turn 24 next month. that's weird. official mid-twenties...is it possible to be dreading something and looking forward to it at the same time? I mean, mid-twenties seems soooo old, but at the same time it's kinda fun to grow up.

peace.
