if you're feeling generous...

If anyone would like to get me an expensive gift, I'm really wanting a rare book called Codex Seraphinianus. And if in this one instance beggars can be choosers, the French edition would be perfect. The Codex is also sold from this Italian bookseller for a MUCH cheaper price. Even with the higher shipping cost, that's probably the best bet. I'll likely look into buying it after the New Year, maybe with my tax return $$, but if you want to do something really spectacular and save me the trouble :) ...

monday math

97 – number of bobby pins I removed from my hair yesterday after having it done for Rachel’s wedding on Friday. No wonder I set off the airport metal detectors.

70 – days until Christmas

0 – episodes of “Seinfeld” I’ve seen

238 – episodes of “Friends” I’ve seen

20,055 – my new top score in pacman, as of Sunday night. I’m getting really good.

1 – day until I finally get a violin

10-11 – months until I go to Africa. Hopefully.

9 – number of books I just bought for $52 from McSweeney’s Publishing. Some of their book bundles are crazy cheap right now.

great accomplishment

I just played the best game of pacman of my life, and beat my previous high score by almost 4,000 points!! The downside of enjoying an hour of pacman is that I now have "joystick hand," and it's a little sore to move it around to type, but it's totally worth it.

fall/winter projects

I'm really excited about my fall/winter reading projects. Here's the schedule:

Current read: The Education of Henry Adams, by Henry Adams
Next: An American Tragedy, vols. 1 & 2, by Theodore Dreiser
After that: The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand
And then: Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand

Two things: First, I realize it may be a bit ambitious to read both of these Ayn Rand books before the leaves start growing back in the spring. I thought about doing one this year and one the next. But, upon further thought, I've tentatively decided to do them consecutively, in the hope that I'll thoroughly enjoy The Fountainhead but that it will gear me up to read her masterpiece next. Second, this is not an exclusive list, as I will certainly be adding Logos selections, among other things.

I'm truly so glad that I'm a reader. It makes life so much better.

best little guy

I just can't resist posting some of my nephew Aiden's recently taken 5 month pictures. Seriously, he's the happiest baby I've ever met. His smile and adorable dimples are in full force, and these pics of him just cracking up are the best!

sad

I knew something was wrong when I saw my dad was calling at 7am Pacific time. My mom's best friend suddenly collapsed and died last night. My first thought upon hearing the news was "that can't be true... she's not old or sick." It's painful to learn that life is what it is and doesn't necessarily follow patterns.

It's been a prettty awful day. LIfe is hard.

Today

Today I'm wearing a suit jacket with elbow patches. It always makes me feel smart, like I truly belong somewhere in the hallowed halls of academia. Maybe I should have worn it tomorrow though, since I'm going to the Secret Science Club.
